William Stell is a scholar of religion, sexuality, disability, and race in American history and culture.
His book Born Again Queer: A History of Evangelical Gay Activism and the Making of Antigay Christianity (Princeton University Press) will be released on May 12, 2026. A groundbreaking history of evangelicalism and homosexuality in the United States from the 1950s to the present, Born Again Queer demonstrates that evangelicalism’s anti-LGBTQ+ positions are neither timeless nor inherent and transforms how we think about American religion, sexuality, and politics.
